Live Music Venues In Cape Town
Green Dolphin Restaurant (V&A Waterfront, tel: 021 421 7471) and Marimba’s at the Convention Centre (tel: 021 418 3366) remain steadfast jazz faithfuls, with regular live music nightlife. Jazz and rhythm & blues lovers will drive as far as necessary when Judith Sephuma, Errol Dyers, or Virtual Jazz Reality are in Cape Town.
The Independent Armchair Theatre (Lower Main Road, Observatory, tel: 021 447 1514), is rated highly for live gigs and concerts & other nightlife activities, and if contemporary trend-setters Freshly Ground should be playing, don't walk by. Plain old pop is always good too, of which Cape Town based Semisane is a fine example, and the band continues to improve with each new CD that tops the South African charts.
Don't be too hasty to dismiss Afrikaans rock music, because baby it’s come a long way since its accordion-pumping days. Be sure to get your Cape Town nightlife fix with the ‘Mystic Boer’ (a.k.a Valiant Swart), when he drops by Stellenbosch’s Dorp Street Theatre Café (tel: 021 886 6107).
Recapture your varsity nightlife days at Stellenbosch’s University-student-cum-budding-rock-star crazed pubs. While you’re there, track down the U2-meets-Soweto-String-Quartet inspired DNA Strings, which serves up what can best be described as an Afro-Celtic rhythm.
