Make Cape Town Tourism (corner Castle/Burg Streets, tel: 021 426 4260) your starting point.  You can grab a cup of coffee here while looking through their one-page low-down on the city's finer points of interest. You won't have time to stop at all the suggested places of interest below, so select your choice.

Guided Walking Tours

Privately guided walking tours are the best way to see Cape Town, with such renowned walking tour guides as Ursula Stephens or Garth Angus, both bookable through Cape Town Tourism. The Cape Art Deco Society puts out a free map of self-guided walks within the CBD, Sea Point and Vredehoek.  Pick up the Art Deco map at Cape Town Tourism, or call the society Chairperson Brent Meersman (tel: 082 568 9940).

Mountain Rambling and Things that go Boom

Ascending the Grande Dame of mountains by foot - Table Mountain - commands proper precautions or the services of a professional guide from the likes of Active Africa Adventures & Touring, tel: 021 788 8750. There’s also Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak to conquer, just for the fun of it or for photographic memories of incredible views.

And worth the stroll, err schlep, is a visit to the Noon Gun at the top of Military Road in Bo-Kaap.  In time-honoured tradition the gun lets the whole city know it is midday and scares the uninformed half to death.  Recover at the Noon Gun Restaurant with tea, lunch or dinner (tel: 021 424 0529).
